Udichi to stage Half Akhrai today
Apart from other performing arts, cultural organisation Udichi Shilpi Gosthi has name and fame to bring quality theatrical productions to stage.
As part of its regular activities, central theatre department of Udichi will stage a show of its 15th production Half Akhrai today at 7:00pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the city.
Written by Ratan Siddiqui and directed by Azad Abul Kalam, the play is based on the historic conflict between Ramnidhi Gupta, popularly known as Nidhu Gupta, father of Bangla tappa songs (a genre of classical music) and his once-favourite disciple Mohan Chand.
In the play, Akhrai, founded in Kolkata by Ramnidhi Gupta, is a community devoted to classical music. Gupta’s unique style of teaching and music become popular soon among the elite class of Kolkata.
When Gupta retires from the post of Akhrai’s principal, Mohonchand Basu takes the charge of the organisation and stands against the previous principles of Gupta. And, the conflict between the guru and disciple comes to the plot of the play. Ultimately, Mohonchand resigns from his post and forms a new trope with his followers named Half Akhrai. This is how the story of the play goes forward.
The cast of the play included Ratan Dev, Anwarul Haque and Fahmida Haque Koli, Maruf Rahman, Hamidul Islam Hillol, Sahidul Alam Dipu and others in different roles.
Saiful Islam was in charge of light design while set had been designed by Anwarul Haque and Joya Sen Gupta had done the music of the production.
