Global Markets Bangladesh recently organized a seminar - "Dialogue on Global Economy: Fragile West, Resilient East" at Hotel Purbani International, Dhaka. Dr. Samiran Chakraborty, Regional Head of Research for Standard Chartered Bank, graced the event as the key note speaker. Dr. Chakraborty, one of the preeminent economists of the region, regularly appears on CNBC, BBC and Bloomberg, and contributes to the leading newspapers as well.

Head of Treasury and other senior officials from the local financial institutions also attended the seminar. It provided participants with invaluable market insight, outlook, commentary and networking opportunities to discuss the shifting global landscape and the effect it will have on businesses in the years ahead.

Mr. Alamgir Morshed, Head of Global Markets, made the opening remarks followed by Dr. Samiran Chakraborty's presentation. He began by focusing on the challenges of the debt-driven Western economies, and the opportunities presented by the emerging countries as well. He highlighted the fact that Standard Chartered has included Bangladesh in the prestigious "7% Club" that are expected to double their GDP in the next 10 years. Dr. Chakraborty also emphasised on the need to diversify the export basket of Bangladesh, and was very optimistic about the prospect of FDI inflow in to Bangladesh.

Following the presentation, there was an interactive Q&A session. The session concluded with Mr. Muhit Rahman, Head of Financial Institutions, giving the vote of thanks to Dr. Chakraborty and the audience. Standard Chartered remains committed to organizing such events in the future, to promote exchange of ideas and facilitate the development of the local financial market.
