Capacity dev can help attract foreign investment: Experts
Bangladesh can attract huge foreign investment by improving capacity in investment treaty arbitration and resolving related disputes quickly, experts said here on Tuesday. They suggested improving institutional capacity and recruitment of skilled workforce to increase the flow of foreign investment.
They came forward with the suggestions at the inaugural session of a three-day workshop, titled ‘Bilateral Investment Treaty Negotiations and Disputes’ held at the conference room of the Industries Ministry.
The Industries Ministry and International Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD) jointly arranged the workshop.
Industries Minister Dilip Barua spoke on the occasion as the chief guest.
Industries Secretary KH Masud Siddiqui, additional secretary Khandaker Rakibur Rahman, joint secretary Afroza Khan, IISD’s experts Bernasconi Osterwalder and Prof Makane Moise Mbengue also spoke on the occasion.
The IISD officials expressed interest to provide required training, financial and technical supports to avail of the opportunity Bangladesh has to attract foreign investment.
Dilip Barua said the government would welcome any international support in formulating environment-friendly investment treaty and policy.
Nearly 50 people representing Industries, Commerce, Foreign and Finance Ministries, Board of Investment, Bangladesh Bank, FBCCI and other government offices are taking part in the workshop.
