Deaths of 2 RMG workers spark protests
Garment workers blocked highways and vandalised factories in Gazipur and Narayanganj after two of their fellows died in separate incidents.
A female worker was knocked down and killed by a bus after the police chased agitating workers in Narayanganj and the other was run over by a covered van on the Mauchak-Phulbaria road in Gazipur when she was returning to work after launch.
Angry workers blocked Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Tangail highways in protest at the deaths that caused tailbacks in the areas.
Our correspondent in Narayanganj reports that a speedy bus crushed a woman worker of Sinha factory, identified as Sonia 22, when police attacked agitating workers to disperse them from the highway, according to witnesses.
Labour unrest in Sinha group factories at Kanchpur under Sonargaon thana continued for the second day on Tuesday after sudden closure of its RMG units. Clashes between police and workers left at least five workers injured on the day.
Police fired blank shots to disperse the workers and restore traffic, said witnesses.
Industrial police unit-4 director Mahbub Alam said that the situation was under control. A bilateral meeting would held at the BGMEA office to settle the matter, he added.
At least 30 people, including cops, were injured in Monday’s clashes over illegal termination of jobs in Sinha group factories.
All workers of Sinha group on Tuesday morning started demonstrations demanding resumption of operation at the factories which the management declared closed after Monday’s trouble.
The workers blocked Dhaka-Sylhet highway after the police arrived.
Our correspondent in Gazipur reports: garment workers blocked Dhaka-Tangail highway for about one hour on Tuesday afternoon after a fellow worker died in a road accident at Purba Mauchak under Kaliakoir upaizla.  The angry workers ransacked a number of
factories and vandalised some buses.
The deceased was identified as Lima Akter,22, of Amtoli in Barguna district and a worker of Jhalu Knitwear Limited at Purba Mauchak of Gazipur.
According to police and fellow workers, Lima was returning to work after lunch at her nearby rented houser. As soon as she reached the factory, a speedy covered van (Narayanganj- Ta-02-0559) knocked her down on Mauchak-Phulbaria road. She died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
As the news spread, fellow workers started protest demonstration blocking the highway. Police charged batons on the agitating workers to remove the blockade.
The situation calmed at about 4:30pm.
Sub-inspector Saiful Islam of Mauchak police said they had arrested the driver of the covered van.
Senior assistant police superintendent of Gazipur industrial police Dewan Lalan Ahmed said reinforcements had been sent to the area to avoid further trouble.
