Prof A A M S Arefin Siddique, Vice Chancellor, Dhaka University and Mr Mizanur Rahman, Trustee, A F Mujibur Rahman Foundation and Chairman of Mathematics Department were among the distinguished guests at the awards ceremony held on Tuesday at the Mathematics Department which was followed by a reception to outgoing students and freshers of the Department. The 5 awardees, Ms Doli Rani Pal, Ms Tanzila Khan, Ms Shifat Perveen Mithila, Ms Nusrat Nazia and Mr Md Rakib Hossain and were handed 1-bhori gold medals and cash totalling Tk1,40,000 for obtaining top positions in the last honours and masters degree examinations.
Among a wide and varied range of support to the education sector, the Foundation has instituted similar awards at Chittagong, Rajshahi and Khulna universities and is also funding construction of the 80,000sft, 8-storey Ganit Bhaban on prime premises kindly donated by Dhaka University.
The late A F Mujibur Rahman was among the very first Bengali Muslim ICS officers and was himself ranked first in the MSc (Pure) examinations of the Calcutta University in 1920, the only Muslim among 23 examinees. The legendary Sir Ashutosh Mukherji in recommending him for selection to the ICS introduced him to the Selection Board with characteristic graciousness as "the boy who broke my record". .
