Mantu Ghosh, other garment labour leaders attacked
Four garment labour leaders, including Garment Sramik Trade Union Centre  president Mantu Ghosh, were assaulted by miscreants in front of Sinha Textile factory at Kanchpur in Narayanganj on Saturday, as they were on their way back after reopening the factory.
The factory was closed on May 21, when its workers took to the streets in protest against sacking of 126 workers.
A tripartite agreement was signed between the factory management, labour leaders and the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association at a meeting at the BGMEA building in Dhaka on May 24.
In accordance with the agreement, Mantu Ghosh and three of his fellows had gone to the factory to ensure its smooth reopening.
New Age correspondent in Narayanganj reported that following the decision, all the workers of Sinha Group resumed work in the presence of the labour leaders Mantu Ghosh, Garment Sramik Trade Union Kendra central leaders Iqbal Hossain, Nurul Islam and Sheikh Sohel and the BGMEA representatives.
After the factory was reopened the four labour leaders, waiting for a bus to return to the capital city, were attacked by 10 to 15 unidentified miscreants.
They were awaiting a bus at the bus stand opposite to the factory.
The miscreants beat and injured them mercilessly.
Local people came to the rescue of Mantu Gosh and the three other leaders.
They sent Mantu to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and the three others are undergoing treatment at Narayangaj.
Mantu Ghosh was released from the DMCH in the afternoon.
Colleagues took him to the CPB central office.
When contacted, Mantu Ghosh, he told New Age that they were awaiting a bus opposite to the Sinha Textile when 10 or 15 unidentified miscreants attacked and injured them.
He said that he suffered injuries on his left ear.
Director of industrial police unit-4 Mahbubul Alam said that they advised the labour leaders to file a case regarding the incident. The factory of Sinha group was running in full swing, he added.
Officer-in-charge of Sonargoan police station Md. Harunar Rashid said that none filed any case.
Garment labour leaders at a protest rally in front of the National Press Club demanded arrest and exemplary punishments of the attackers.
The labour leaders warned that they would go for a tough movement unless the attackers were brought to book.
Chaired by the labour leader Sadequr Rahman Shamim, the rally was addressed, among others by labour leader Lutfar Rahman, KM Ruhul Amin, Iddris Ali and Joly Talukder.
Later, in a procession the protesters paraded city streets.
