Subrata Roy Sahara, Chairman of Sahara Group of India tells at an interview with daily sun.
daily sun: First of all, would you please tell us, what are the reasons that attracted your group to come in Bangladesh with large investment proposals?
Subrata Roy Sahara: We are in this industry of real estate for quite a long time in India. We have successfully provided lifestyle to different localities around India. Bangladesh is a country to which I am very much connected to because my mother is from Bikrampur and I have heard so many stories of that place. It has always been my desire to come back and do something for the country I have strong emotional connections with. When the proposal was made towards us to come and invest in Bangladesh and as the delegation team I had sent before this tour provided me with immense encouraging response, Sahara India Pariwar decided to come to Bangladesh.
daily sun: You have already inked deal with the housing ministry on a housing project targeting middle, lower middle class people. You meant to develop a New Dhaka. There are other districts and regions also where there is prospects for developing housing projects. What is your plan in this regard?
Subrata Roy Sahara: The project you are talking about is just one project where we will try to develop a full equipped satellite town which will help Dhaka city to recover from the present over population and resource crisis. We will definitely contribute in this industry by building satellite cities throughout the country. I am sure these will be affordable and life enriching for people of Bangladesh.
daily sun: What are the other areas that your group plans to invest in Bangladesh?
Subrata Roy Sahara: We are currently starting off with the real estate sector. We will be looking into the possibilities of initiating activities in the health, education, tourism, information technology, infrastructural development or even sports.
daily sun: As a foreign investor what is your observation about the country’s investment atmosphere, especially in terms of foreign direct investment?
Subrata Roy Sahara: We see the country’s investment opportunities to be very optimistic. With an average GDP growth of 6 percent for the last couple of years we find the overall situation very encouraging. During my brief stay in Bangladesh I was amazed to see the hospitality, friendliness and the love for culture and language of the people.
daily sun: Would you please comment on cooperation you were rendered by the Bangladesh authority in the process of inking the agreement.
Subrata Roy Sahara: We are extremely happy at the possibilities of working in Bangladesh. Apart from the business ventures, we also have social and sentimental interests to venture all possibilities. I was particularly moved by the humility of the people here in Bangladesh.
