Govt urged to reconsider tax, VAT expansion
Green and rights organisations on Tuesday demanded that the government should reconsider its move to expand direct tax and VAT in the upcoming national budget.
Leaders of the organisations working on climate change issues made the demand at a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the capital.
They said black politics was the prime source of black money and discriminatory tax imposition.
They also mentioned that the country must try to be self-reliant in development financing and should not expect foreign aid any more.
The group of seven organisations carried a banner which said that the nation wanted to pay more taxes but there must be steps to reduce luxury and stop corruption.
At the programme, they circulated leaflets with the demands which include declaring a roadmap to stop whitening of black money, punishment tax on undisclosed money, declaring austerity measure in line with the recommendation of Public Expenditure Review Commission Report emulating the example of the new French president.
They also demanded that there must be steps to reduce corruption in revenue department while the office of Auditor General must publish all audit reports of government offices.
They urged the parliamentary standing committee on public audit and accounts to be more active and open in this regard.
The programme was moderated by Mostafa Kamal Akanda of EquityBD.
Representatives from Shurakkah Foundation, OK Society, Bhumihin Samiti, Bangladesh Krishak Fedration, Jatiya Sramik Jote, EquityBD and Online Knowledge Society were also present.
