Stocks pass bearish week

Dhaka stocks passed a bearish week, as the trade wast made debut two weeks ago. Benchmark index of Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSE General Index, fell 43.02 points, or 1.44 percent to 2,942.44 on Thursday, the w centred in Navana CNG shares thaeek's last trading day.

Navana CNG completed share offloading Wednesday, recording the lowest time in share sales under direct listing method. Investors rushed for Navana CNG shares speculating a good return in future, market operators said. “Even the retail investors sold out other sector shares from their portfolios to take position in the Navana. This selling pressure pulled down the market,” said an operator.

The huge Navana trade made it top turnover leader on the premier bourse with 1,60,45,100 shares worth Tk 330.42 crore being traded, accounting for 14.38 percent of the total turnover. The broader DSE All Share Price Index dropped 37.23 points, or 1.48 percent to 2,472.72. Operators said ongoing pre-IPO placements of a number of forthcoming issues and the holy month of Ramadan have also sent the market into bearish sentiment. Losers beat advancers 141 to 102. One security remained unchanged.

Both total and daily turnover however rose 0.49 percent to Tk 2,297.56 crore and Tk 459.51 crore last week. A total of 13,50,47,714 shares traded on the prime bourse, marking an 8.68 percent fall.

Market capitalisation declined by 1.13 percent to Tk 1,30,855 crore.

Renwick Jajneswar, which was the biggest gainer for last week, advanced by 32.87 percent. Janata Insurance, which declined by 12 percent, was the top loser. Chittagong stocks also marked a fall. The CSE Selective Categories Index declined by 1.56 percent to 6,537.34 points. The CSE All Share Price Index slid by 0.87 percent to 10,301.8 points. A total of 2,39,89,814 shares worth Tk 305.73 crore changed hands on the Chittagong Stock Exchange. Of the traded securities, 81 advanced, 104 declined and four remained unchanged.

Beximco Pharma topped the turnover leaders on the port city bourse with 50,42,385 shares worth Tk 81.47 crore being traded on the port city bourse. Mithun Knitting and Dyeing was the biggest gainer that advanced by 24.67 percent on the CSE. Federal Insurance was the top loser that declined by 21.12 percent.
