 |
The National Board of Revenue has announced that Tk 923 crore of so-called 'black' money changed colour to become 'white' and legal in the fiscal year 2009-10. Yet, there could be more changing of colours by the country's capital resources. The total amount of money whitened could however rise to Tk 1,500 crore when the accounts are finalised, Bashiruddin Ahmed, an NBR member responsible for tax administration and management, said at a press briefing yesterday. Some 1,923 individuals have legalised the amount through investing in four permitted sectors, Basir Uddin Ahmed, National Board of Revenue member (Tax Admin and Monitoring), revealed this at a press conference yesterday. He, however, said that the total amount of whitened money could rise to Tk 1,500 crore when the accounts were finalised. The exchequer got about Tk121.21 crore in taxes for legalising the black money, Ahmed said. The government had allowed people who had undisclosed income to legalise the money by investing it in one of four sectors - establishing new businesses, refurbishing or expanding old businesses, buying shares of listed companies from the stock market, or buying a flat or floor space. Ahmed said that 1,320 people had legalised the money through purchasing a flat or floor space. About 162 people had invested Tk 239 crore in the establishment of new businesses and another 145 people invested Tk 257.28 crore in the expansion of old businesses, the NBR official said. Ahmed said that 296 persons had bought shares worth Tk 426 core in the stock market. NBR chairman Nasiruddin Ahmed told the press conference that there had been an 18 per cent growth in revenue collection in 2009-10 fiscal comparing with the previous year. In 2009-10, the NBR collected Tk 62,000 crore in revenue against a target of Tk 61,000 crore while Tk 52,527 crore was collected in 2008-09. It earned Tk 21,643.25 crore as value added tax (VAT) against the target of Tk 20,735 crore - a growth of 24.51 percent growth, and Tk 17,087.14 crore under income tax against the target of Tk 16,560 crore - a growth of 23.30 per cent. Income from travel and other taxes, however, declined by 7.4 per cent. |
